Stora Enso Kvarnsveden invests in the latest vibration technology for monitoring of PM10

The paper mill Stora Enso Kvarnsveden is now focusing on a complete renovation of vibration monitoring systems related to paper machine PM10’s tender side in the drying section where the transducers, connectors, cables, and measurement units will be replaced because the system has reached the end of its service life.

An older online system from SPM will be replaced with the multifunctional online system Intellinova. A total of 77 transducer positions with vibration and shock pulse transducers will now to be replaced with new accelerometers. The monitoring system will utilize the patented High Definition technology HD ENV that provides extremely long forewarning times for deteriorating mechanical condition.

Ulf Isaksson, Predictive Maintenance Supervisor, and Peter Forsström, Predictive Maintentance Inspector, justifies the investment: "Since we now run the Intellinova online system at PM10 soft calender, which is working well, we decided to develop the system further. One of the strengths of the system is that we are able to see bearing damage/locking collar looseness very early with the measuring technique HD ENV, which in turn means that we can prepare our maintenance operations well in advance and perform them during planned conditions, i.e. planned stops.”

Stora Enso Kvarnsveden also implements online monitoring with systems from SPM on the winder belonging to PM12, the soft calendar at PM10, and the supercalender at PM8 with good results. Online monitoring and periodic measurements with the portable instrument Leonova Emerald from SPM is done on selected measuring points throughout the pulp and paper mill; for example, bearing condition is monitored with SPM HD on several of the wire and wash presses that provide pulp for paper machine PM12.

Stora Enso Kvarnsveden is one of Sweden’s largest paper mills. The mill produces improved newsprint and magazine paper on three paper machines. The production capacity is approximately 750,000 tons per year.
